Our country by Johan Ludvig Runeberg

We visited Helsinki in Finland in August 2017. I took these pictures of the statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg at Esplanaden in Helsinki on our way to Sveaborg. Johan Ludvig Runeberg wrote the Finnish national anthem Our country in Swedish, Vårt land, as Finland was and is a bilingual country. The song that originally was a poem was translated to finnish and became the national anthem of Finland.

Runeberg is also a part of the literature history of Sweden. I read about Runeberg in school but never really thought about Runeberg being a Swedish speaking Finnish writer living in Finland before I started to visit Finland when my son moved to Finland. At the time when Runeberg lived Finland was a part of Russia from 1809 to 1918 when Finland became an independent country.

The text to the anthem can be found in English, Swedish and Finnish on this site, If you want to listen to the anthem sang in Swedish you can find it here.

To the memory of my husband that shared the journey with me.

Vesijohto = waterpipe sign on Sveaborg – Suomenlinna in Helsinki

Sometimes you see something that makes you curious. I took this picture of a sign by the quayside on Sveaborg, Vesijohto means waterpipe and I suppose this information could be good to get for someone. Sveaborg is a sea fortress whose construction started in 1748 by Augustin Ehrensvärd who was a Swedish military officer and an architect. Finland was a part of Sweden until 1809 when Finland was occupied by Russia. Sveaborg means “fortress of Svea”. The name “Svea” is female and a symbol for Sweden. Finland became a sovereign state in 1917 and the fortress was renamed Suomenlinna – “castle of Finland”. Sveaborg – Suomenlinna is a UNESCO world Heritage site. More about Sveaborg – Suomenlinna at wikipedia.

The picture is taken in august 2017,

Klosterbacken – Luostarinmäki – museum in Åbo – Turku

I went to Finland for the weekend in the beginning of december 2022. We went to Åbo, Turku in Finnish, and visited the Christmas Market and also the museum Klosterbacken – Luostarinmäki, in a part of Åbo that was spared when the rest of the town burnt in 1827. In the beginning of the 20th century it was doomed to be destroyed but voices were heard to make a museum of the old buildings. And fortunately the houses were saved and was made into a the museum. I am sharing this on My Corner of the World.
